Easy Composting
Composting using the course of least resistance
You have a house and a yard and that equals a lot of work, so who has time to mess with turning compost and taking its temperature? Making compost doesn't have to be a competitive activity. If you want compost for your garden or lawn, you can still have it ... Mother Nature is on your side.
Tools
You don't need much to make compost. For food scraps, keep a covered container near your food prep area to capture vegetable and fruit parings and so on.
Outdoor tools that are useful:
- Pitch fork, spading fork, or compost fork for mixing dry brown with green, moist contributions
- Wheelbarrow or garden cart for big clean up jobs
No sweat compost making
Find a spot in your yard that is convenient for you and for hauling debris. It should be level and on well drained ground. It can be in the sun or shade (sun works faster), but keep it a respectable distance from your house (and your neighbor's), as well as from shallow-rooted trees or shrubs.
Add material from your kitchen veggie parings or from yard clean-up. The smaller the pieces, the faster they break down, but entropy (being the nature of the universe) guarantees that eventually anything you add to the compost will turn into lovely, nutrient-rich soil for your garden.
